What Is Pepper Spray and How Does It Work?
Pepper spray is a chemical compound derived from Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), the active ingredient in hot peppers. When sprayed at an attacker's face, it causes immediate and intense inflammation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. The eyes swell shut involuntarily, making it nearly impossible to see. Breathing becomes difficult and painful. The skin burns and tingles intensely. These effects are immediate, involuntary, and temporary, typically lasting 30 to 45 minutes, more than enough time for you to escape to safety.
Pepper spray works on the body's involuntary responses, which means it is effective regardless of the attacker's size, pain tolerance, or whether they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It does not require physical contact, giving you distance between you and the threat. It leaves no permanent injury and requires no permit in most states, making it one of the most accessible and widely carried self-defense tools in the world.
Why Carry Pepper Spray?
Pepper spray is proven, affordable, legal in most states, and small enough to carry anywhere. It fits on a keychain, in a pocket, in a purse, or clipped to a bag strap. It requires no training to use effectively and can be deployed in seconds. Unlike a stun gun or TASER, it can be sprayed from a distance without making contact with an attacker, keeping you safer during a confrontation. It is one of the most recommended first self-defense tools for anyone who is new to personal protection and one of the most consistently carried tools for people who have been practicing personal safety for years.
Understanding OC Percentage and SHU Rating
Not all pepper sprays are equal. The two numbers that matter most when comparing products are the OC percentage and the Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) rating. OC percentage refers to how much of the formula is Oleoresin Capsicum. A higher OC percentage does not always mean a stronger product because it depends on the heat rating of the OC used. The SHU rating measures the actual heat level of the OC. A spray with a lower OC percentage but a very high SHU rating can be significantly more effective than one with a higher percentage at a lower heat rating. All of the pepper sprays we carry are selected based on both metrics to ensure real stopping power.
Spray Patterns: Stream, Cone, Gel, and Foam
Pepper spray comes in several spray patterns and each has advantages depending on your situation. Stream sprays shoot a concentrated jet of liquid with accuracy at range and low wind blowback risk, making them ideal for outdoor use. Cone sprays release a wider mist pattern that is easier to deploy quickly without precise aim but can be affected by wind. Gel sprays stick to an attacker's face, reducing the risk of blowback in confined spaces and making them a great choice for use indoors or in vehicles. Foam sprays expand on contact, covering the face and making it difficult to wipe away. We carry all four spray types so you can choose the one that fits your environment and carry style.
Choosing the Right Size
Pepper spray canisters range from tiny keychain models holding a few short bursts to larger units with 20 or more bursts at extended range. Keychain models are the most portable and best for everyday carry in a pocket or on keys. Mid-size belt clip models offer more capacity and range without being too bulky. Larger home defense models are designed for bedside or vehicle use and offer maximum capacity. Think about where and how you plan to carry before choosing a size. A pepper spray you always have with you is more valuable than a powerful one that stays in a drawer.
Shipping Restrictions
Pepper spray is legal in all 50 states but Smart Pulse Safety does not ship pepper spray to Massachusetts or New York as online sales to residents of those states are prohibited. Residents of Massachusetts and New York must purchase pepper spray from a licensed firearms dealer or pharmacist in their state. Additional canister size and concentration restrictions apply in some states. Please check your local laws before ordering. For a full state by state breakdown visit our Product Laws page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does pepper spray last?
Most pepper spray canisters have a shelf life of 2 to 4 years from the manufacture date. Check the expiration date on your canister and replace it before it expires. Expired pepper spray may not deploy with the same force or effectiveness.
Does pepper spray work on dogs?
Yes. Pepper spray is effective on dogs and is commonly used by mail carriers, joggers, and cyclists for protection against aggressive dogs. We carry specific animal deterrent sprays formulated for this purpose.
Can pepper spray be used indoors?
Yes, but use caution. Gel and foam formulas are the best choice for indoor use because they reduce the risk of the spray dispersing into the air and affecting you. Stream formulas can also be used indoors with care. Avoid cone mist formulas in enclosed spaces.
Will wind affect pepper spray?
Cone mist sprays can be affected by wind and may blow back toward you. Stream and gel formulas have significantly reduced blowback risk and are recommended for outdoor use in windy conditions.
What do I do if I accidentally spray myself?
Move to fresh air immediately. Do not touch your face. Flush affected areas with large amounts of cold water for 15 to 20 minutes. Avoid using soap as it can spread the oil. The effects will subside on their own within 30 to 45 minutes.
Do I need a permit to carry pepper spray?
No permit is required in most U.S. states. Some states have restrictions on canister size or concentration. Check your local laws before purchasing. Smart Pulse Safety does not ship to states or localities where online sales are prohibited.
